The Haunted

Blending contemporary musical composition with the deep core of Greek folk tradition, composer Dimitris Maramis presents the musical theatre trilogy The Haunted for the first time in Thessaloniki. The work is based on the masterful demotic ballads “The Bridge of Arta” and “The Song of the Dead Brother”, as well as the folk legend “The Ghost of Charmaina” set to poetry by Sotiris Trivizas.

The connecting link among these works is their supernatural dimension and emotional power. The archetypal figures of the stories—the dead who return, the women who are sacrificed, the people haunted by fate—transform the stage into a space of collective memory. The Haunted does not merely tell stories; it resurrects memories and rituals that survive through time.

Moving between alternating rhythms and an uninterrupted melodic flow, the musical language of Dimitris Maramis in The Haunted draws inspiration from Greek and Balkan musical traditions, forging a personal musical idiom.

The work was first presented as a commission by the Athens Concert Hall in 2019, receiving a warm reception from both audiences and critics. In 2025, it was performed at the Delphi Festival “To Lalon Ydor” and the Pindareia Festival in Thebes, while in 2026 it returned to the Athens Concert Hall, confirming its place as one of the most distinctive works of contemporary Greek musical theatre.
