The play Garamond12, deriving its name from a…typeface, will be participating in the 58th Dimitria Festival and is scheduled be performed on the stage of the Avlaia Theatre in Thessaloniki on Tuesday 3 & Wednesday 4 October, 2023.
The work, which emerged from the School of Playwriting of Poreia Theatre, delves into such topics, as identity, weaning, and cowardice towards life, the supportive and at times suffocating mother-child relationship, self-acceptance, refusal to accept reality, vital role models, the exposure of an artist, the inability to adhere to a “prescribed” way of living, friendship, romantic desire…
Mark Hunter, a talented, emerging author, suffers from agoraphobia and lives in constant home seclusion with his overprotective mother, fixated on the memory of his prematurely deceased uncle. Although each of his novels creates a sensation among critics and resonates strongly with the public, he struggles to expose himself as an artist in terms of marketing and public relations. When the pressure from his publisher, the media, and the public becomes unbearable, he hires Jake, his extroverted alter ego, to present himself as Mark to the public, thus crafting an “ideal” self as well as a charming object of desire. The appearance of a young aspiring author in Jake’s life puts Mark in a predicament, as it’s only a matter of time before the truth is revealed. The ending is both tragic and redemptive.
The direction is undertaken by the Russian Sergei Okunev, graduate of the renowned GITIS school and it marks the director’s first work in Greece.
