The Kitchen Dance _ A House Trance Vocabulary by Katerina Foti

We chose Vlali Market because its wealth of fresh ingredients provides the ideal backdrop for the philosophy of the performance whose lead character is Kaiti, a woman who lives almost exclusively in her kitchen! There, her past, present and future flow before her eyes in a stream of consciousness, transforming into a universal and collective female narrative. By exploring the dimension of free time and its existence within a stifling daily environment which is defined solely by the constraints of work, the choreographer engaged with women from the cultural associations of Elefsina, all of whom are working wives and mothers. Their testimonies and stories led her to the core, universal space where free time and work coexist in a delicate balance: the kitchen.

Although the kitchen is entirely associated with household work, it also serves as a space for unrestrained female expression, free from the worry of potential social criticism. Thus, beyond being a prison and a site of endless manual tasks- often an additional duty that the working woman is obliged to carry out- it is also a place of meeting and celebration, a space in which a woman can reflect on her whole life and stage her own small personal revolution.
