MOUNT ATHOS CENTER, 109 EGNATIA STR.Fotis Kontoglou was one of the most significant artists of the 1930s generation, whose work left a lasting mark on the spiritual and artistic life of Greece for decades. While he expressed himself primarily through painting, his literary output was equally important.
In 1923, he travelled to Mount Athos for the first time. This visit influenced him profoundly and became the pivotal moment of his artistic path. “What I need to say is that I did not expect to find such perfect art within the churches of the monasteries”, he wrote that same year in “The Art of Athos”, in which he presented copies he had created during his stay at the monasteries of Mount Athos.
The exhibition organized by the Mount Athos Center aims to highlight the unique relationship between this great artist and the Athonite community, which lasted throughout his life and continually nourished him both spiritually and artistically.
