Tamara Denić, Germany

A committed photo journalist is threatened in Serbia, whereupon she flees to Germany with her daughter. But then she also experiences increasing hostility and violence in her new home due to her work…

 

Director Biography – Tamara Denić

Tamara Denić is born in former Yugoslavia 1992 In 2016, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in art and multimedia and a minor in media informatics at LMU in Munich with an interactive, experimental short film. After that, Tamara worked as a dubbing recording manager, film production and editorial assistant and video editor in Berlin. At the same time, she acted in independent theatre groups and experimented with video performances. However, Tamara soon devoted herself increasingly to narrative and documentary short film projects. Along side her film projects, paintings and photographs, Tamara experiments with animations and VJing. 2022 she graduated with a master’s degree in film directing at Hamburg Media School with a scholarship from Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation.

LA REPRODUCTION

Jean-Marie Villeneuve, France

Marc-Antoine, 35 years old, with an outdated appearance, one day sees a new neighbor arrive in the building opposite his home. Quickly, he begins to observe him. A few days later, Marc-Antoine discovers that Amélie, an unacknowledged high school sweetheart, is his girlfriend. Resembling this neighbor then becomes a real obsession.

 

 

Director Biography – Jean-Marie Villeneuve

Jean-Marie Villeneuve, director, is the author of a feature film TOUT EST FAUX released in theaters in September 2014. He has also directed several short films since the beginning of the 2010s including THE CREAM, AXN, AUTUMN, WHERE IS CHARLIE? which are multi-selected in international festivals. At the beginning of 2023, he finished his latest short LA REPRODUCTION with Franc Bruneau, produced by Sélénite Productions. In parallel with his activities as a filmmaker, he teaches cinema near Paris (France).

MEANTIME


Guillaume Scaillet, France

Marc, a young city dweller, goes into the countryside where he stays on his own in a lonely house. He is expecting his girlfriend Louise who is supposed to come and join him soon, but she is late showing up. Marc is keen on keeping fit and becomes obsessed with the healthy daily routine he has set up for himself, but the silence grows heavier and heavier, and Louise hasn’t arrived yet. In the anxious surrounding calm, Marc gradually falls prey to the assault of all kinds of sounds that are usually ignored and sounds that are not usually heard.

 

 

Director Biography – Guillaume Scaillet

Graduated from the screenwriting department of La Fémis, Guillaume now works on his projects as a writer and director. He’s currently writing the script of his first feature Jeanne Dark produced by Caïmans Productions. He also works as a scriptwriter and consultant on diverse movies and series projects.

Pauline Archange, Céline Perréard, France

Over the course of an evening, Romane, Sarah, Emmanuel and Boris connect on Voice Ever, a new dating app where you choose your date based on their voice. Their weaknesses and vulnerabilities will surface in their desire to meet.

SET LAM

Vincent Fontano, France

In an insular city’s ghetto, in the midst of a trance ritual, a young girl is paralysed by fear. She is afraid her loved ones may be hurt or even disappear. It is then that her grandmother tells her the strange tale of Edwardo, the first one of his kin to have seen and fought death. The child is captivated, feeling that there is a reason her grandmother is recounting this tale.

 

Director Biography – Vincent Fontano

As a student of the Réunion conservatory in 2009 he holds an atypical course through the literary creation scene on the island. An avid reader of James Baldwin, Dany Laferrière and Tony Morrison, and writer and stage director for the Ker Béton company, he invites the audience to reflect on Reunion island society and the world in general.

In 2013 he changes medium and pivots to cinema with his short film « Blaké » which he writes, directs and stars in. The film gets noticed and earns the France Télévision prize and the SACD prize.
Following this first success he directs his second short film, « Sèt Lam », in 2021. In this modern allegory, deeply anchored in Réunion culture, he touches on spirituality, heritage and the strong link with our ancestors, all narrated by a grandmother, the powerful and matriarcal face of a society built around orality.

Nikos Vittis, Greece

In Athens, during the financial crisis, a young man and a young woman had to stay in the same apartment for a few days and this cohabitation changed their lives

 

Director Biography – Nikos Vittis

After his engineering studies he studied film music at Berklee College of Music. He has written music for more than fifty theatrical plays, short and long films, documentaries and installations. He was involved in cinema productions early on in various positions. He has directed another short film, many music videos and received a grant from the Greek Film Center for writing a screenplay for a feature film. Ηe has produced or co-produced four short films. In recent years he has been working as a Location Manager and/or assistant production manager mostly in action movies.

IN SPITE OF LOVE


Yuval Barnea, Shira Daniel Hellwing, Israel

In order to save her sister from the war in Ukraine, Alona must pay security deposit to the Israeli authorities. She reaches for Renée, a demented past actress of whom she takes care, and asks her for the money. The unexpected response from Renée shakes their close relationship, while their love for each other is being put to the test.

Alexander Kakouris, Greece

Xenia is trying to interact with her social circle, in search of true communication. Her attempt turns out harder than expected, as she is up against a timeless social phenomenon.

 

Director Biography – Alexander Kakouris

Alexander Kakouris was introduced to filmmaking in 2015. He is an undergratuate student at SAE Athens, and has attended script-writing seminars from the University of East Anglia, NFTS and University Of Birmingham. He has worked as Creative Director for a record company, and is currently working as Director, Director of Photography and Editor for commercials, music videos, short films and documentaries. In 2020 he founded ODRYX Productions, an audiovisual production company. His latest short-film is addressing a timeless social phenomenon, as he explores the lack of true human connection and communication.

Nans Laborde-Jourdàa, France

Fran is in his hometown to rest and visit his mother. Following the jerky rhythm of Bolero, this journey along the paths of memory and desire will lead him and the whole village to a joyfully chaotic climax.

Director Biography – Nans Laborde-Jourdàa

Filmmaker and actor, Nans has acted in films under the direction of Sophie Fillières, Julie Lopez-Curval, Sébastien Téot. He owns with Margot Alexandre the company TORO TORO, writes and directs several shows. In 2018, he directed between Japan and France Looking for Reiko, a short film produced by Margaux Lorier. In 2021, he directed the short film Léo by night produced by Paraiso Production, selected in Clermont-Ferrand, FIFIB and pre-selected for the César 2023.

Zoey Cao, China

In search of inspiration for her script, a young Chinese student plunges into a tense yet subtle relationship: being a lover of a married French man in his fifties.

 

Director Biography – Zoey Cao

Zoey Cao (Her/They), Writer & Director, Film & Television Photography and Production major at Communication University of China. She is the screenwriter for the award-winning features DRIFTED IN LIFE and I’M THE HAPPIEST BABY IN THE WORLD. She also co-writes and shoots the feature film CHANG’E which entered multiple international film festivals and is currently on the largest streaming platform specializing in Chinese language indie films — CathayPlay. The short film PLAY HOUSE she wrote and directed in 2022 is the official selection of the Academy-qualifying Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival and many other internationally acknowledged festivals. Her other accolades include the General Champion of the Selection of New Literary Talent by the Shanghai Writers Association and the first prize in the Shanghai Poetry Creation Competition.

A man hijacks a taxi when the taxi driver refuses to take him where he wants. Two men will share a ride where everything will go wrong and a girl will change their way, where the end will be a mystery even for the heroes of Short Draft.

Director Biography – Spyridon Papaspyrou

Since 2015 I’ve been working as an Assistant Director in Greece and have participated in many projects, National and International.
I have made 2 more short films in the past as DIY projects.

Twenty-six-year-old Sima grew up in love and peace since childhood. She firmly believes in goodness and she will never refuse to help anyone in trouble. But one day, all her ideas about herself will turn upside down.

Director Biography – Vika Degteva

Vika Degteva was born in Moscow in 1994. Graduated from the Faculty of Journalism of the Russian State University for the Humanities. She has worked as an executive producer since 2018. In 2020, she entered the Moscow Film School for the directing course of A. Popogrebsky and P. Bardin. The first film of Vika is the short drama «You do Love Me!». It was shown at the festivals “Saint Anna” and the Moscow International Film Festival. The psychological thriller “Dark” is the second short film and the diploma film of the director.

QUEEN SIZE

Avril Besson, France

This morning, Marina has an appointment with Charlie to sell her a mattress. This evening, she will cancel her plane for Reunion. But they don’t know that yet.

Director Biography – Avril Besson

After a science degree, a literary preparatory class and a formation at CELSA, she joined the editing department of La Fémis in 2009. There, she edited numerous films, selected in international festivals. In writing, she approaches comedy as well as documentaries, directing several short films that she feels are experiments. Mördegal is the culmination of her work with the duo of actresses from her feature film project, Les Matins Merveilleux.

THE DREAM OF JOSEPH

François Hébert, France

One summer, Maud, 26, meets a boy on the beach and collapses in front of a picture.

A few months later, she returns with a camera to try to understand.

 

Director Biography – François Hébert

After five years of public law, François Hébert entered the Fémis in the script department (2010-2014). After graduating, he co-wrote for performances and video-installations for contemporary art and directed several short films selected in festivals (Clermont-Ferrand, FIFIB). His work focuses on the notion of collapse – whether intimate or collective – and questions the place of the non-human in cinematic grammar. In 2018, he was admitted as a boarder at the Académie de France in Rome for a one-year residency for creation, research or experimentation at the Villa Médicis (film writing section). There, together with the painter Thomas Lévy-Lasnes and the art historian Riccardo Venturi, he organised the colloquium “Reconstructing the gaze”: bringing together philosophers and scientists, activists and artists, this workshop was an opportunity to discuss how the arts, aware of the trajectory taken by our societies, can participate in the transformation of our imaginations. Since 2020, he has joined the SACRe doctorate (PSL) in which he is working, through research and creation, on his thesis subject “Experiences of collapse, healing through images”. THE DREAM OF JOSEPH is his first short fiction film.

DUSTLIGHT

Chryssanthi Kouri, Greece

While facing pivotal life changes Matina arrives at the family summer house to clear out her late mother’s things. There she begins to unravel, as past and present collide until she reaches a personal epiphany.

 

Director Biography – Chryssanthi Kouri

Chryssanthi is a Greek filmmaker based in London and Athens. She has written, directed, and produced six short narrative films as well as a number of music videos. She also directs theatre and works as a Director/Producer for TV in the UK. Her interests lie in female-led, character-driven stories about the human condition and existential themes. With her style of storytelling, she aims to make films that are relatable, visually engaging, and emotive. Her work has been described as “simple and complex, lyrical and accessible, and beautifully executed”.

Currently, Chryssanthi is developing a number of short and feature projects, as well as her debut TV series, a female ensemble, black comedy-drama set in austerity Athens. The project was recently optioned by an independent Greek production company.
