In a society where kissing is punishable by death and people pay for things with slaps to the face, Angine, an unhappy woman, shops compulsively in a department store. There, she becomes fascinated by an ingenuous salesgirl. The two become close, raising the suspicions of a jealous colleague.

Director Biography

Alexandre is a Franco-Indian visual artist whose work has been collected by the MoMA and Guggenheim Museum, New York, and CNAP, Paris.

Natalie is a Romanian-American writer, curator and filmmaker, with a PhD in art history and film.

BARLEBAS

MALU JANSSEN, BELGIUM/NETHERLANDS

In 1595, a woman accused of witchcraft refuses to be silenced, leaving her free spirit and powerful voice to inspire a new generation.

Barlebas depicts the last days in the life of the headstrong woman Heylken (28). She is accused of witchcraft, just as she was about to leave her village for good.
While Heylken never gets to leave, she inspires young girl Griet (12) with her free spirit and powerful voice.

An experimental musical period drama, set in 1595 and centered on the persecution of witches in the Dutch South.

Director Biography

Malu Janssen (1989, Eindhoven) is a screenwriter and director based in Amsterdam. After studying Theater and Film Studies at the University of Utrecht she enrolled at the Netherlands Film Academy where she graduated in 2016 in directing fiction. Her short films EIGEN (2016, graduation film), STUFF (2019), A CAPPELLA IN D MINOR (2022, graduation film) and BARLEBAS (2024) have all traveled and won awards at the international film festival circuit.
She is in late development of her feature debut WE ARE LIGHT, about a small living commune, that strives to let go of food to live on light. The film is supported by the Netherlands Film Fund and produced by Family Affair Films. The script is based on the acclaimed novel by Gerda Blees.

In the Ocean of Time

Korinna Krauss, GERMANY

2055. After the climate catastrophe survivors must live in caves. The only hope left is to travel back in time and prevent the disaster from happening. Only few have memories from before, which seem to be a gateway to the past. After various experiments a woman is able to traverse the ocean of times and arrive at the scene of her childhood memory: on a ferry she saw a man being pushed overboard.

 

Director Biography

Korinna Krauss grew up in Munich, Brussels and Athens. She first studied painting at Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) for three years and then began to study documentary film at the University of Television and Film in Munich (HFF). In addition she completed her acting education 2009.

QUEEN MOTHER

KING LOUIE PALOMO, CANADA

When a mother visits her son, a drag performer, a night of raw confessions forces them to confront the unhealed wounds of their past.

Director Biography

King Louie is a Queer, Filipino-Canadian, producer-director committed to uncompromising visions that challenge conventional paradigms. He works to encourage dialogue and foster community through his films. Over the years, King has produced projects that have been screened at local and international film festivals. He is an alumna of the 2024 CFC Norman Jewison Film Program: Director’s Lab.

As a writer-director, King’s credits include NENE (Standout Director at the 21st Reelworld Film Festival) and STAY (Runner-up for the Jury Award for Best Narrative Short at Out on Film: Atlanta’s LGBTQ Film Fest). His latest directorial work is INANG REYNA, which was created during his residency at the Canadian Film Center.

As a producer, King’s credits include CROSSROADS, which was acquired by Viddsee, LOST BENEATH THE STARS (Warsaw 2018, Edmonton 2018), which was bought at Cannes Film Market by RTE Ireland for network and online distribution and secured European theatrical and online distribution with Sofy TV. He also produced THE LONELIEST BOY IN THE WORLD (featured on Directors Notes). His latest produced short, AUGANIC, won ‘Best Live-Action Short’ at the deadCenter Film Festival and is in consideration for the 97th Oscars.

King Louie works in the visual effects industry as a Production Manager. Recent credits include THE LAST OF US S1 (HBO), which won the 75th Emmys for Outstanding Special Visual Effects.

HOTEL ACROPOLE

SARAH LASRY, FRANCE

Rivka is pregnant. She has a strange and painful wound in her back that won’t heal, ever since her partner died. The day before his ashes are scattered, Abel, an old friend, shows up unexpectedly at her hotel room. He needs to revive an old memory between them at the Hotel Acropole.

Director Biography

Sarah Lasry is a French writer and director. She graduated from Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. Her last short film, “Spell on You” (2021) was selected in numerous international festivals, such as Palm Springs International Shortfest, Gérardmer Fantastic Film Festival, Bolton, Slash, FIFIB… “Hotel Acropole” had its world premiere at Fantasia International Film Festival in July. Sarah’s work explores themes of ritual, desire and pain through elevated genre. She is currently developing her first feature.

STUPORIA

JOSHUA JADI, AUSTRIA

STUPORIA is a deeply personal LGBTQIA+-themed story about a dancer who is forced to stop dancing after surviving a violent attack in a park. The film follows his emotional and physical recovery throughout a day as he finds the strength to heal and dance one last time. At its core, the film explores trauma, resilience, and the quiet power of reclaiming one’s identity through movement and art.

Director Biography

German-Hungarian director and writer. Berlinale Talents, Torino ScriptLab, Sarajevo Talents and Locarno Academy Summer School alumni as well as a member of the European Film Academy. His short films have travelled to over 50 festivals in the world.
