How much Jazz can you take? You’ll hear it all at the 55th Dimitria Festival!

 

The 55th Dimitria festival is bopping to a jazz rhythm, hosting the ‘Open Jazz Festival’ of the Cultural Centre of the Municipality of Thessaloniki. This year we may not be able to enjoy it under the starlit sky, but the Jazz Festival: ‘Open Jazz Festival’ is coming to your living room for an unprecedented concert experience.

What could be more exciting than a programme permeated by contemporary jazz and improvisational music trends, with everything that includes from the traditional European and American schools? Jazz is global musical expression, it means improvisation, and through it musicians exchange ideas, emotions, and knowledge, producing musical gems.

Our online streams provide an incredible platform for the Thessaloniki jazz scene and will highlight the real concept of jazz with classic pieces from the global repertoire, as well as with new renditions and creations.

The programme of this complicated event includes three concerts of Thessaloniki bands, with talented artists with an international profile and many appearances in Greece and abroad. The concerts of the musical ensembles were recorded at the ‘To Avgo’ multi-purpose venue.

The musical ensembles are: Blue note tribute jazz quintet, Oleg Chaly Organ Trio – Wes Montgomery Tribute, and Yako trio with James Wylie encourage us to let their sound carry us away, to enjoy the melodies and powerful solos, and to compose unique moments with them.

Thus, despite unexpected turns taken due to the pandemic, on 6, 8, and 10 October we will present an online jazz experience that will be open to all.

Tuesday 6 October | 20:20 Blue note tribute jazz quintet

The quintet consists of Thessaloniki musicians with a continuous presence on the jazz scene of Thessaloniki and Greece. A dynamic duo of wind instruments, with Giannis Ikonomidis on trumpet and Charis Kapetanakis on saxophone, supported by a finely tuned rhythm section with Filippos Kostavelis on piano, Lakis Tzimkas on bass, and Alexandros Spanidis on drums, playing  hardbop, mainstream, and straight-ahead jazz, with a repertoire from Blue Note Records.

The musicians are:

  • Giannis Ikonomidis – trumpet
  • Charis Kapetanakis – saxophone
  • Filippos Kostavelis – piano
  • Lakis Tzimkas – double bass
  • Alekos Spanidis – drums

 

Saturday 10 October | 20:20 Yako trio with James Wylie

The ensemble consists of three young musicians, Leandros Pasias on piano, Vangelis Vrachnos on double bass, and Giorgos Klountzos-Chrysidis on drums, all from Thessaloniki, and attempting something completely original and creative. After wandering abroad for a long time, they are now shaping their own musical identity, presenting original compositions in the unique musical style of modern jazz. In this video they are joined by the one and only James Wylie on saxophone!

Monday 12 October | 20:20 Oleg Chaly Organ Trio – Wes Montgomery Tribute

The Oleg Chaly trio with the renowned Makis Stefanidis and Nikos Vargiamidis have often performed in Greece and abroad, playing to the rhythms of jazz and blues. They are appearing on the stage of the 55th Dimitria Festival in a concert that is a tribute to the great jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery, who from early on in his career was connected to the sound of the organ trio, along with Melvin Rhyne and Jimmy Smith.

 

The musicians are:

  • Οleg Chaly – Hammond Organ
  • Makis Stefanidis – electric guitar
  • Nikos Vargiamidis – drums

There will be a total of three transmissions via the Festival’s platform. All of the content of the Open Jazz Festival will also be available after its premiere, which has been scheduled for 6, 10, and 12 October at 20:20 on the digital platform of the 55th Dimitria Festival.
