Greetings

Konstantinos Zervas Mayor

The 58th edition of the Dimitria festival is upon us, and for 24 days, different genres of art shall be creatively intertwined in our city’s artistic stages. Greek and international artists, among them a plethora of award-winning directors, choreographers, musicians, visual artists and performers converse with the audience that awaits to admire their work, dream, trouble themselves, be entertained and above all, live the experience that art has to offer them.

We are not part of the creative process, after all not everyone possesses this talent, but we create the conditions needed for audiences to enjoy a series of quality shows and taste the magic of contemporary artistic creation.

The team of the Directorate for Culture, cooperation with the Committee of Artistic Advisors, once again, presents a wide range of international and domestic creations, each having left its own mark in the art world

The Dimitria Festival is a unique part of Thessaloniki’s cultural life, envelops nearly all art forms while being a hub for creation for all Greek artists as well as a hospitable place for international creators. Through the Dimitria Festival, performing arts find their most creative form of expression while the festival itself steadily and dynamically develops.

With the Dimitria Festival, Thessaloniki becomes a place for gatherings, dialogue and reflection where artists have the freedom to give birth to new ideas, present their work and express with their own, creative manner issues brought to light by our time.

Thessaloniki, the city of culture, remains dedicated to art, and the City of Thessaloniki loves partnership and cooperation. The Dimitria Festival is nowadays a significant power of cooperation for Greek and foreign cultural organisations.

On this year’s 58th edition, where Thomas Ostermeyer directs for the theatre one of Fassbinder’s legendary works, Christos Papadopoulos narrates through movement six stories, liquid like “The Waves” of the sea, Yiannis Gaitis’ works show us his unwavering love for humanity and Nicola Piovani himself conducts the Thessaloniki City Symphony Orchestra, we can be rest assured that… “Life is Good!”

Inspiration, Exploration, Gatherings. All the arts, bundled in one festival.

We look forward to welcoming you to the 58th Dimitria Festival!

Maria Karagianni Deputy Mayor for Culture and Tourism

Art honors history, engages with the challenges and contemplations of the present, and directs its gaze towards tomorrow; the art of both outward exploration and local identity. Featuring proposals from emerging talents as well as works by established creators, the festival embraces contributions from Greece, the Balkans, Europe, and America.  Works that showcase the power of art, aiming for the future while also embracing the art that fearlessly reconciles with wounds and guilt. Music, theater, dance, visual arts, and cinema. Pioneering works with innovative forms, as well as works of realism and classical expression. Artistic proposals with an emphasis on contemporary trends, creative fusions, the dynamism of flight, and the imaginative realm of dreamscaping.
